The SGN36G is a 36-inch sealed-burner gas cooktop from Thermador’s older Traditional Series, using standard (non-ExtraLow) burners rated up to 11,000 BTU/HR alongside lower-output burners around 6,500 BTU/HR, all lit by electronic spark ignition. It was also offered as the SGNCV36G, which adds a built-in Cook’n’Vent downdraft ventilator, and could be paired with a Griddle’n Grill accessory – though on SGN models that accessory functions as a griddle only, unlike the SGS version which supports both griddle and grill inserts.
Because ignition and burner control on this generation is entirely mechanical and electro-mechanical (spark igniters plus standard knobs, no touch electronics), most service calls involve a dirty or wet igniter, a burner cap that isn’t seated correctly, or – on Cook’n’Vent models – a soiled ventilator filter reducing airflow rather than a failed blower motor.

Most Common Issues on This Model
If you smell gas, shut off the gas supply first, then check that igniters are clean - a boil-over or debris on the igniter is the most common cause of a burner that won't spark reliably on this series.
All igniters on this model spark together whenever any single burner is turned on, so widespread clicking with no gas smell is expected behavior, not an error.
A cooktop with the Cook'n'Vent option that loses suction is typically a clogged or soiled ventilator filter rather than a blower motor failure.
