The GGN36 represents Thermador’s older, non-sealed open-burner design within the Traditional Series, predating the sealed-burner SGN/SGS cooktops. Burner output is noticeably lower than the sealed-burner versions – roughly 950 to 6,500 BTU/HR – and ignition is handled electronically rather than with a standing pilot. It was also offered as the GGNCV36 with a built-in Cook’n’Vent downdraft ventilator.
Because the burners on this open design aren’t sealed flush to the cooktop, they’re more exposed to spilled food working its way into the burner base than Thermador’s later sealed-burner cooktops, so a burner that won’t light reliably or burns unevenly usually needs the burner base and igniter cleaned rather than pointing to a bigger valve or regulator issue.

Most Common Issues on This Model
If you smell gas, shut off the gas supply first, then check the igniter and burner ports - open-burner designs like this one are more exposed to boil-over debris than sealed burners.
Because these burners aren't sealed to the cooktop surface, spilled food is more likely to work its way into the burner base; a burner that won't ignite reliably often needs the base and igniter cleaned out.
On Cook'n'Vent (GGNCV) variants, reduced suction is usually a dirty filter rather than a failed blower.
